Hilton Head Island
Four ways to see wild bottlenose dolphins on Hilton Head — from sunrise donuts to private sunset charters.
Updated March 2026
Hilton Head Island is one of the best places on the East Coast to see wild Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. The island's tidal creeks, marshes, and nearshore waters support a resident population of several hundred dolphins year-round — and the best way to see them is from the water.
Below are the four dolphin tour experiences available on the island. Each one is a different vibe — pick the one that fits your group and your schedule. All tours depart from Palmetto Bay Marina and book through FareHarbor.

Dolphin Tour
The classic Hilton Head dolphin experience
Hilton Head's most popular on-water activity. You'll cruise through the island's tidal creeks and nearshore waters aboard a covered pontoon boat, guided by a naturalist who knows exactly where to find the resident bottlenose dolphins. Sightings are nearly guaranteed in season — these dolphins are wild but used to boats, so they'll often ride the bow wave right next to you. Great for all ages, no experience needed.

Dolphin Tour
Dolphins at sunrise — with fresh donuts on board
The best way to start a morning on Hilton Head. This early-morning tour heads out at first light when the water is glassy calm and the dolphins are most active. Fresh donuts and coffee are served on board while your guide spots dolphins in the morning mist. The light is incredible for photos, the crowds are nonexistent, and the donuts are a serious bonus. This one books out fast — grab it early.

Dolphin Tour
Dolphins at golden hour — the most scenic tour on the island
If you do one thing on Hilton Head, make it this. The Sunset Dolphin Tour heads out in the late afternoon as the light turns golden over the marsh. Dolphins are active in the evening feeding, the sky puts on a show, and the whole experience feels like something out of a travel magazine. Bring a camera and a light jacket — the breeze picks up as the sun goes down. This is the tour locals recommend to every first-time visitor.

Dolphin Tour
Your own boat, your own schedule — up to 14 guests
Want the dolphin experience without sharing the boat with strangers? The private tour gives your group exclusive use of the vessel for the full 90 minutes. Up to 14 people — perfect for family reunions, bachelorette parties, corporate outings, or anyone who wants a more personal experience. Your guide focuses entirely on your group, you set the pace, and you can request any time slot that works for your schedule. Available as a standard, donut, or sunset tour.
Several hundred bottlenose dolphins live in Hilton Head's waters year-round — not migratory visitors. Sighting rates are consistently high.
The island's tidal creeks and protected sounds mean flat, calm water even when the ocean is rough. Tours rarely cancel due to conditions.
All tours depart from Palmetto Bay Marina — easy to find, free parking, and right in the heart of the island's best dolphin habitat.
Dolphins are present year-round, but sightings are most frequent from May through October when the water is warmest and baitfish are most abundant. Morning and late afternoon tours tend to have the most active dolphins.
Yes — all tours welcome children of all ages. The covered pontoon boats are stable and comfortable, life jackets are provided, and the guides are experienced with families. The Dolphin & Donut Tour is especially popular with kids.
The private tour gives your group exclusive use of the boat — no other guests. You get up to 14 people, your guide's full attention, and the flexibility to choose your departure time. The regular tours share the boat with other guests (up to 49 total).
Yes — especially during peak season (June–August), all tours fill up quickly. The Dolphin & Donut Tour and Sunset Tour book out the fastest. We recommend booking at least 3–5 days in advance in summer.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, a light layer for the breeze, and a camera. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. The boats have shade, but you'll want sun protection for the open sections.
