Planning Guides
By car, plane, or ferry — the complete guide to getting here and getting around.
Hilton Head has its own small airport (HHH), but most visitors fly into Savannah (SAV) and drive 45 minutes. SAV has significantly more flight options and often cheaper fares. The drive from Savannah is easy and well-marked.

Hilton Head is connected to the mainland by the US-278 causeway. The drive is straightforward from most East Coast cities. The final approach across the marshes and tidal creeks is genuinely beautiful — a nice introduction to the Lowcountry.
Traffic warning: US-278 into Hilton Head can back up significantly on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings during peak season (June–August). If driving, aim to arrive before noon on Saturday or after 7pm on Friday.
Once you're here, here's how to get around.
A car is almost essential on Hilton Head. The island is 12 miles long and public transit is limited. Rental cars are available at Savannah Airport and on the island. Book early in peak season — inventory gets tight.
Hilton Head has 60+ miles of paved bike paths. For short trips within your community (especially Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes), bikes are often faster than cars. Rent from local shops for better rates than resort rentals.
Uber and Lyft operate on the island but availability can be limited, especially late at night or during peak season. Don't rely on rideshare as your primary transportation — have a backup plan.
If you're staying inside Sea Pines, the resort trolley runs regularly between Harbour Town, the Beach Club, and other key spots. It's free for guests and a great way to avoid parking hassles.
