Planning Guides
From oceanfront luxury resorts to comfortable mid-range options — the honest local guide.
Hilton Head has a handful of full-service resort hotels and a wider range of mid-range options. The key distinction on this island is location — oceanfront properties command a significant premium, but the experience of walking directly onto the beach is genuinely different from driving to a beach access point. If your budget allows, prioritize direct beach access.
For the full Hilton Head experience, also consider vacation rentals inside the gated communities (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes) — they often offer more space and amenities than hotels at comparable price points. See our Vacation Rentals guide for details.
Rates are approximate and vary significantly by season. Peak season (June–August) rates are typically 40–60% higher than off-season.
The Westin is Hilton Head's premier full-service resort hotel — a AAA Four Diamond property with direct beach access, multiple pools, a world-class spa, and multiple dining options. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, and the service is consistently excellent. Located in Port Royal Plantation on the quieter north end of the island.
Local tip: Book an oceanfront room — the premium is worth it. The north-end beach here is wider and less crowded than the south end.
The Omni is a traditional full-service oceanfront hotel located within Palmetto Dunes. It combines hotel convenience with resort amenities — multiple pools, direct beach access, on-site dining, and access to Palmetto Dunes' golf courses and tennis facilities. A reliable, well-run hotel with consistently good service.
Local tip: Ask about packages that include golf or tennis — the Omni regularly offers deals that bundle hotel rates with Palmetto Dunes activities.
The Marriott is a solid full-service resort hotel within Palmetto Dunes, offering a good balance of amenities and value. The rooms are comfortable and well-maintained, the pools are excellent, and the beach access is direct. A reliable choice for Marriott Bonvoy members and families who want a traditional hotel experience.
Local tip: The Marriott's beach is excellent and less crowded than the Omni's side. Request a room in the newer tower for updated finishes.
The Sonesta is a well-regarded resort hotel within Shipyard Plantation, offering a quieter alternative to the Westin and Omni. The beach here is excellent and less trafficked, and the golf courses within Shipyard are solid. A good value option for families and golfers who don't need the full luxury experience.
Local tip: The Sonesta's beach is genuinely one of the best on the island — wide, flat, and much less crowded than Coligny or Driessen.
The Hampton Inn is the best mid-range hotel option on Hilton Head — clean, comfortable, and well-located. It's not oceanfront, but it's a short drive to multiple beaches and centrally located for exploring the island. A reliable choice if you're spending most of your time out and about rather than at the hotel.
Local tip: Great base for golfers — centrally located and close to multiple courses. The free breakfast saves $15–$20/person per day.
Villas inside Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes often offer more space, better amenities, and comparable pricing to resort hotels — especially for families or groups of 4+.
